Siliceous mudstone

Mudstone cobble

Siliceous mudstone

Lithogenous sedimentary rock.
Sample of dense, layered siliceous mudstone (mostly quartz silt bearing some diatoms) deposited on far offshore continental shelf environment or in a deep abyssal plain setting. The thin stratified layers indicate that it was probably deposited in a low-energy, slow depositional environment. The layers also show that they were not exposed to submarine bioturbation (probably a low-oxygen environment). Beach cobble is extremely hards and is a rock of rock of undetermined age or source (a long way from where it originally came from).
Sample from Carlsbad Beach, San Diego County, California.
